Restaurant Brugarol Barcelona

Brugarol Restaurant Barcelona

Hidden within the narrow, ancient alleys of Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter lies a restaurant that tells a story far beyond the city. Brugarol Barcelona isn’t just a place to dine,  it’s where the land of the Costa Brava finds its voice in the city. With only 21 seats and a kitchen led by acclaimed South African chef Angelo Scirocco, this intimate space offers something rare: a living thread between the city and the soil. Angelo, is one of the best chefs in Africa, came to experience farm cooking at Brugarol Mas Bell-Lloc in Palamós. Through his passion, dedication and positive energy he convinced Victoria Engelhorn to open up an entry point for people to explore the magic of Brugarol already in the city.

What makes Brugarol Barcelona truly unique is that it’s a dining experience that doesn’t just speak of flavour, but of place — where every ingredient carries the memory of salty air, wild herbs, and quiet hands.

culture, nature, and gastronomy

We define ourselves as a tapas bar inspired by Japanese Izakaya bars. Our chefs create Japanese-inspired tapas with a style that leans more toward the traditional than the modern. Most of our products come from the land and farms of Brugarol in Palamós, in the heart of Empordà, where culture, history, and gastronomy shape both character and landscape.

Our cuisine is raw in essence—bold, pure, and honest. Every dish channels the elements of our land: the air, the fire, and the winds of the Mediterranean Sea. We invite you to discover a sensory journey where ingredients speak, tradition meets innovation, and every bite tells a story.

Take a seat in this stylish, intimate gastrobar in the Gothic quarter of Barcelona’s city center. Here, a gastronomic experience unfolds at a relaxed pace. Whether it’s a business lunch or a romantic dinner, Brugarol Restaurant Barcelona offers a setting where flavor, ambiance, and connection come together.

about the chef

“If you stay true to your origins and your artistic signature as a chef, you become far more powerful than any passing trend,” Angelo Scirocco once shared with the M&G. Chef and co-owner of Restaurant Brugarol Barcelona, Scirocco has spent nearly his entire life in kitchens. “I’ve been cooking since I was six years old. My family has been chefs for five generations, so I grew up in a relative’s restaurant. My mother would try to cook for me, but I often insisted on preparing my own meals, and she let me.”

Cooking was never simply a career choice; it was a calling shaped by heritage and instinct. Since turning professional, his life has taken on the demanding rhythm of the restaurant world, often finishing service after 11 p.m. After long hours in the kitchen, he rarely feels the urge to cook at home—his craft is both his passion and his daily devotion. Always driven by new creative challenges, Scirocco founded Restaurant Brugarol Barcelona as both chef and owner. There, he created a tapas bar with the unexpected soul of a Japanese izakaya, a space where respect for tradition and seasonality guides every dish, and where his roots and artistic identity define a cuisine that transcends trends.
